Early Years and Education: 

Ashneer was born in June, 1982, in Delhi. He was Grown up in a middle-class family, he was surrounded by role models of hard work and dedication. He belongs to an educated family, his father was a chartered accountant and his mother was a teacher. Ashneer’s schooling journey began at Apeejay School in Delhi. He excelled in academics and set his sights on making a name for himself. Originally, he considered the CA path, inspired by his father’s profession, Ashneer felt drawn to engineering instead. He joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in 2000 to study Civil Engineering.

He was selected as an exchange student, he received a €6000 scholarship from the French Embassy to study at INSA-Lyon in France. This international exposure broadened his horizons and taught him invaluable lessons about resilience, global perspectives, and innovation. After completing his engineering degree, he moved on to IIM Ahmedabad for an MBA in Finance. He achieved rank-holder status and set himself apart as a top student.

From Corporate Ladders to Startup Dreams

Following his MBA, Ashneer began his career as Vice President at Kotak Investment Banking in 2006. For seven years, he worked on IPO deals and gained a deep understanding of finance and investment, which later helped in his entrepreneurial journey. But the steady corporate life wasn’t enough; he yearned for something more.

In 2013, he left Kotak and joined American Express as Director of Corporate Development. Here, he sharpened his strategic planning skills, but his entrepreneurial spirit nudged him toward exploring a new frontier. This push eventually led him to the startup world, where he took on the role of Chief Financial Officer at Grofers in 2017,  His work at Grofers paved the way for his success, but after a few years, he realised it was time for his own venture.

The BharatPe: Building a Fintech Giant

Ashneer’s passion for disruption culminated in the creation of BharatPe in 2018. He co-founded the fintech startup, a platform that empower India’s small merchants with digital payment solutions. BharatPe’s simple, all-in-one QR code allowed small businesses to accept digital payments seamlessly. Under his leadership, BharatPe grew exponentially and reached over 6 million merchants in 35 cities and securing funding from top investors. By 2021, BharatPe was valued at $2.85 billion and joined the prestigious unicorn club, became India’s top fintech successes. However, his journey with BharatPe wasn’t without challenges.

Amidst controversies and internal disputes, Ashneer eventually exited the company in 2022. Despite the setback, his indomitable spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to explore new entrepreneurial dreams.

Ashneer’s bold and candid personality led him to a role as a judge on the first season of Shark Tank India in 2021. He is known for his tough yet insightful evaluations, Ashneer quickly became a household name. His presence on the show underscored his expertise in identifying promising startups, and he invested in ventures that aimed to make a real impact, including BluePine Industries, Revamp Moto, and Skippi Pops.
