Early Life and Education
Ritesh was born on 16 November 1993, in Bissam Cuttack. He grew up in Titilagarh, where his family used to run a small shop. He attended St. John’s Senior Secondary School and later moved to Delhi for college. However, his passion for technology and entrepreneurship led him to a new path. The idea of OYO
Ritesh’s entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 20 when he founded Oravel Stays. When Ritesh was living in California in 2013, he established OYO with the goal of running a hotel through Oravel Stays. Where his Target was low-cost online tourists, it was a platform to help people locate and book affordable hotels. The hotel in Gurgaon, later rebranded as OYO saw a sharp increase in occupancy rates in its first month. It went from 19% to 90%.
After coming back to India, Agarwal found this as an opportunity to elevate budget accommodations for all people throughout the world. Despite initial challenges, including limited knowledge of entrepreneurship and a lack of resources, Ritesh’s determination never wavered. His breakthrough came in the year 2013 when he became the first Indian to join the Thiel Fellowship and he received a $100,000 grant that provided a much-needed financial boost to his startup.

Early Challenges and overcome
The initial days of Oravel Stays were tough. The platform was not solving the core problem Ritesh had identified: the need for affordable hotels with standardised services. This realisation led him to pivot his business model. He extensively travelled across India, visiting hundreds of hotels to understand the issues plaguing the hospitality industry. His research revealed non-standard services and unpredictability as the major pain points, which he decided to address through OYO.
In 2013, Oravel Stays was rebranded as OYO (On Your Own). They need a business model focused on providing standardised, affordable rooms across India. Ritesh’s innovative approach, which involved partnering with hotels rather than owning them. It allowed OYO to expand rapidly without heavy capital expenditure. By 2015, OYO had attracted $25 million in funding, and by July, it had secured $100 million from SoftBank. It fueled its rapid expansion.
Rapid Growth and Global Expansion
OYO’s growth trajectory was nothing short of meteoric. By 2016, OYO had achieved the milestone of one million check-ins and had expanded to Malaysia. In 2017, it ventured into Nepal, and by 2018, OYO had established its presence in the UK, UAE, Dubai, China, Singapore, and Indonesia. In 2019, OYO started operating in over 500 cities globally, offering more than 330,000 rooms.
Ritesh’s relentless efforts and innovative strategies paid off, making him the world’s second-youngest self-made billionaire at the young age of 25. As of 2024, his net worth is estimated at approximately $160 billion USD which is equal to ₹16,000 crore. His journey from a college dropout to a billionaire entrepreneur is a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs worldwide.
