Early Life and Struggles

Raj was born into a family with humble beginnings. His grandfather, father, and uncle migrated from Rajasthan to Indore in the 1980s in search of work. They initially sold coconut on the streets, but later, Raj's father and uncle began working in a soap factory. By 1990, Raj’s father had launched the dishwasher brand Jadugar which stabilised the family’s financial situation.

However, the 2008 recession dealt a blow to the business, and in 2013, Raj’s father suffered a diabetic attack and left the family in severe financial distress. At just 16, Raj found himself at a crossroads. He wasn’t academically inclined and struggled with public speaking, but the responsibility of supporting his family weighed heavily on him. Studying hard to get a job didn’t seem like an option, so he turned to entrepreneurship.

The Birth of an Entrepreneur

Raj borrowed ₹10,000 from his father and decided to start a soap-making business, inspired by his family’s history in the industry. In 2003, his father started a chemical trading business as well, supplying soap manufacturers in the country. He lacked formal knowledge, He taught himself soap-making by watching YouTube tutorials and seeking guidance from his father. He discovered a gap in the market for affordable liquid dishwashers, dominated by brands like Vim and Pril.

Raj decided to create a high-quality product at a lower price point and launched his own dishwashing liquid, Jadugar Drop, in 2013. Raj took a hands-on approach, selling his products door-to-door and offering live demonstrations to families and grocery store owners in nearby localities. His focus was on building trust and relationships rather than immediate profits. He priced his dishwashing liquid significantly lower than competitors and ensured affordability without compromising on quality.

A clever sales strategy helped Raj gain traction. Instead of distributing small sachets as free samples, he gave away full 500 ml bottles, knowing that customers would be more likely to try and use the product. He then offered discounts for bulk purchases, further incentivizing customers. This approach paid off, as word spread about his product’s effectiveness. Raj’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop at product sales. He created a multi-level marketing model targeting housewives in Indore’s housing societies. Raj empowered these women by offering them the opportunity to earn money through selling his products, giving them a 25% commission.

This initiative not only helped him scale his business but also received recognition from the local media for promoting financial independence among women. By 2014, Raj’s product was widely used in housing societies, and his soap business had achieved profitability within a year. Raj’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed. In 2015, he was chosen to represent India at a United Nations youth program. This experience opened new doors for him, and by 2016, Raj began delivering motivational speeches at global organisations such as Jaguar Land Rover, TCS Global, and Reliance Industries. He merged his soap business with his father’s chemical trading company, and together they rebranded under Shamani Industries.

The company now manufactures a range of household products and has established itself as a major player in the homecare category in Indore and its surrounding areas.Raj has remained steadfast in his local-first strategy. He believes in building a strong foothold in regional markets before expanding nationally. His business model focuses on growing gradually, going kilometre-by-kilometre instead of rushing to capture entire states or cities.
