Who is Kalapana Saroj?

Kalpana Saroj is a businesswoman, entrepreneur and a TEDx speaker. She is the chairperson of Kamani Tubes in Mumbai. She bought the distressed assets of Kamani Tubes Company and successfully steered the company back to profitability. 

Early Life and Struggles

Kalpana was born into a Dalit family in Vidarbha, Maharashtra. She grew up amidst poverty and societal discrimination. Her father was a constable, he did his best to provide for the family. But life in the police quarters was far from comfortable. At school, Kalpana faced blatant caste-based discrimination. Teachers segregated her, classmates avoided her, and their parents discouraged any interaction. Despite these adversities, she remained a bright student and cherished her education.

But societal norms intervened early. At the tender age of 12, her parents arranged her marriage and thrust her into a life of hardships in Mumbai. Kalpana lived with her husband’s extended family. She endured relentless verbal and physical abuse while managing household chores for ten people. She became malnourished and dejected, her condition was worse. She was finally rescued by her father, who took her back home. However, her return to her village brought fresh new challenges.

In the deeply patriarchal and caste-conscious community, staying with one’s parents after marriage was considered a stigma. The situation made her worse, she attempted to end her life by consuming rat poison. Miraculously, she survived. That moment became a turning point. Reflecting on her second chance at life, Kalpana resolved to rise above her circumstances.

From Survival to Success

Kalpana returned to Mumbai, determined to chart her own path. She began working in a garment factory as an assistant tailor. Her dedication and hard work paid off, as she quickly mastered tailoring and earned a promotion. After working for years, she saved some rupees and rented a one-room flat for her family.

Tragedy struck again when her younger sister fell ill and died due to a lack of medical funds. This devastating loss fueled Kalpana's resolve to break free from the cycle of poverty. She explored government schemes and secured a loan to start a furniture business, crafting affordable versions of high-end pieces. She balanced her tailoring work with the new business, she worked for over 16-hour days. Slowly but steadily, she built a foundation for her entrepreneurial ambitions.

Reviving Kamani Tubes

In 2006, Kalpana was approached by a company's workers for help. She bought a company called Kamani Tubes, which was set up in 1959 by Ramji H. Kamani. He was unable to stay afloat, and it found no buyers in the market. In 1988, the keys were handed over to the factory workers. The company was drowning in debt and plagued by mismanagement. The company was once a leader in manufacturing non-ferrous metal pipes and tubes but declared bankruptcy in 1995.

Kalpana formed a core team of ten members and worked tirelessly to settle the company’s debts, implement reforms, and steer it toward profitability. Under her leadership, Kamani Tubes not only recovered but flourished. Today, it generates revenues exceeding ₹100 crore, a testament to her vision and determination. Kalpana Saroj’s journey is not just a tale of rags to riches but a powerful narrative of breaking barriers. 

From being a child bride and a victim of caste discrimination to building a $112 million business empire, she has rewritten the script of her life. Her achievements go beyond financial success.
